Edge MTAs shouldn't accept invalid domains like this. I understand that many SA instances don't have control of the edge MTA and have to process trusted Received: headers. I think times have changed over the past 8 years and this is no longer an issue specifically for .home or .lan but could be a more general problem with other new TLDs which has been solved by the new registryboundaries feature in 20_aux_tlds.cf.
