We back port bug fixes into the 0.9 branch as they come in, so if there is a particular fix you want to get you can always build from the head of branch-0.9 and expect only stability improvements compared with Spark 0.9.0.
The timing of the maintenance releases depends a bit on what bug fixes come in and their importance.
