Hi Patrick, this is a very interesting idea. I thought about this before and I found a cool library which we could possibly use to connect cameras [1]
It seems that they support different operating systems, further they have multiple drivers (e.g. GStreamer). I tried to run an example locally, but it did not work on my computer yet.
