As for the other piece (null property replacements), the last time JavascriptValidatorTag was changed was 3/14 so I'm not sure how that would have been impacted by a change in the nightly builds between 3/28 and 5/13 -- unless something happened in commons-validator (the messages are actually retrieved by ValidatorResources) -- but I don't think the version dependency on that has changed either. Did you change which version of commons-validator you use?
