If better assembly is what you want, why not just put Spring at the core and use it to wire everything together? We could use factories to allow Spring to populate with the context-correct instances of things like ModuleConfig. I'll volunteer to do the work on the 1.4 branch as soon as we get 1.3 underway.
Well yes, I have no objection to this in principle, although I am somewhat concerned about migration paths, and about parallel development of another radical change while we are still going to be trying to get people to adopt Struts 1.3.
Have you got any idea about the strategy to get there without forcing people? Could you do it with an alternate ActionServlet? If so, it may be something which could be implemented in a pluggable form, as struts-chain was.
