I see what you mean now.  I prefer declarative over programmatic also.  There 
would not be any assumptions.  We could keep the attributes collection 
reserved for true attributes.  This would require a few changes as we would be 
removing some logic making it more generic but adding support for the 
properties.

This would be a pretty sizable refactoring.  I think the attached patch could 
be applied as a base for starting this work as it contains the inheritance 
fix.  I would like to hear Craig's and David's feedback first.......
