I was thinking about using Ant to build the example application, but still use
Maven for the dist target and all it does there. Would that work?

At this point I don't think it's worth the effort to finish the Maven 1
builds. Anything that goes into maven.xml will have to be rewritten for
Maven 2. I'd say stick with Ant until someone comes along to convert
you to
m2. :) (And I don't see a problem with releasing BSF using the Ant
build.)
