VW was making Bug/Beetle for 50 years or so, it acquired Classic
status sometimes in 60-ies, before Golf/Rabbit was introduced ;-)

Of course, America has its own timeframe, where 3-year cycle is
considered eternity, and a car manufactured for two years in a row
without even minor restyling is considered dated. It does not matter
how well the car was thought out at the first place, new is always
better. Look, Ma, chrome strips and different wheel covers. Its a
f#$%ing new car now, baby!

And why did they do that? See above.

P.S. I'd rather see some progress in cloth washer design, seems that
it froze in 50-ies.

Michael.
