You try it with -U to see if you've got the latest IDEA plugin. I forget when that was added. If not, depending on how much time you have to spend on this, my next step would be to build maven-idea-plugin from source. Or I'd script a bunch of 'wget ...' statements to grab what I needed. Alternately, we can just deal with -sources and -javadocs later if anyone asks for them.
