I think scale matters for this issue, though.

Could we twist Jasper and/or EL to give us any extra functionality we
need? 

Personally I just want really easy iteration and trivial access to data
and (arbitrary?) code: I liked JXP's backticks.

JSTL always felt clunky to me even though I understand its purpose; the
ease of iteration and variable access in Velocity and FreeMarker were
much nicer.

Do we need to support JSP < 2.0?
