I'd also recommend 2.1, but if it turns out to be a small change, backporting it might be nice to get it out quicker.
As for the state of 2.1, my EL, conversion API, and static refactories are done, tests pass, but I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't runtime issues at this stage. The other big change for 2.1 we talked about is the annotations cleanup, which hasn't really started other than some discussion. Therefore, if we had a lot of activity, 2.1 would still be at least a few months away.
