What about #1 with 1 twist?

Prefix the role with "Emeritus (mm/YY)" to further clarify when they
went inactive.

Actually, my vote is for #3, since previous releases will have those
guys/gals still listed in the distribution.  I think we should keep
the current list, ummm current.  Just my $.02.
