Yeah, it isn't Python where code won't compile because you missed some indention :D Anyway, I'm not saying to avoid using auto-format, just to make another step and check the effects and maybe it will show some places to apply refactoring. Everybody heard about - smell of code - and thus is one of it. Note: Every committer has right to edit pages of Struts website, just checkout http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/struts/site/trunk/ (yes, Subversion!) and edit!
