Thanks, I tried it and it looks the same. I'll continue to test. I can see why it's good to use one API throughout, but I was not aware that Xft was intended for anything but fonts -- it doesn't seem suckless to have to trick it into drawing a rectangle like this. More generally (st and beyond) I'm interested in why there is a push to deprecate use of functions like XDrawRectangle when there does not seem to be adequate replacement; I can't see an alternative in XRender or Xft without (presumably) more chatter with the server. I also did some tests (admittedly behind QT) and could not get comparable performance from XRender. Thanks for the update, -- Mark
