I don't agree with this sentiment -- dmenu happily supports arbitrary text entry when the thing you want to enter isn't in the list of presented items. I already use dmenu, so I would much rather maintain my ~40 line patch than introduce a new tool to my workflow that may eventually diverge from dmenu in ways I consider undesirable or be abandoned by its sole maintainer.
