Not to be overlooked is that .doc files like many others from the ms world are ole2 structured storage documents, more or less a FAT-like filesystem in a file, so to make sense of them you need a structured storage reader, e.g. libgsf or the OOo so[t|3] module to get access to the contained streams that comprise the real document contents.
