Just a question: What prevents OOo from being able to use tables in
footnotes and endnotes?
Nothing in principle, but we disabled such functionality from the
beginning. We have a lot of complex algorithmns regarding the layout of
tables and we have a lot of complex algorithmns for footnotes. Because
we never allowed both to work together we cannot guarantee the quality
for such a combination. Maybe all works fine, maybe there are situations
where the algorithmns rely on the fact that they cannot be combined?!
It looks like this is quite possible inside the
fileformat. Our WordPerfect importer is for the while losing any table
in the notes. In CWS fs04, I will change this and the table will be
converted simply to paragraph-mark-separated text, but a proper solution
would be quite preferable to this sub-optimal work around.

Yes, for sure. Another work around would be to put the table into a
frame, which could be inserted into a footnote. The disadvantage is that
such a frame will not be splitted at the end of the page.
