Was idly thinking about what I'd like in the writer UI recently.

1) A scrolling sidepanel like in impress to show a preview of all the
current pages in a document. Same functionality as impress to see what
is on a given page for quick navigation to it.

2) Make File->New Document to (again similiar to impress) default to
showing a pretty "select from template" dialog where you select from
previews of the first and seconds pages of the template. With the
default being the current blank normal template. And some of the others
being pre-canned solutions to some common tasks/problems, e.g.

2.1) a sample document with a title page without headers/footers, and
second page starting at page no 1 with headers/footers.
  2.2) formal letter
  2.3) memo
  2.4) thesis
2.5) some pretty examples purely to show some pretty features

3) perhaps make the default image anchoring that of "anchored as
character", it's the simplest anchoring format for users to understand

*vague handwaving*

4) some UI way to disentangle "document outline" numbering where styles
are assigned to the outline numbering vs the "normal" numbering which
can be applied to a style/paragraph and which includes an outline style
which is all a bit confusing. I don't think many people find
tools->outline numbering, and get stuck on the "outline" tab of the
normal numbering dialog.
