I made some brief comments at http://blogs.linux.ie/caolan/2007/03/12/notesmarginnotes-in-sw/ and there's some unusable sample code which might help to illustrate some of the relevant parts of the code for our notes implementation. It would be a good idea to do a competitive analysis of competing products, indeed msword, but also wordperfect maybe abiword and especially Pages from iWorks.
