I just sent Mathias an off-list note, but was thinking a bit more,
so ...
Developers working with the Zotero project (http://zotero.org) just
about have OOo integration sorted out. This is great!
There's one problem, however, that relates to a limitation in OOo.
They want round-trip compatabilty with Word. User creates document in
Word and adds citations, and they should remain live in OOo.
Using fields in Word is by far the preferred solution here. But OOo
does not really have any generic field support, and it doesn't really
preserve field logic.
To get around this, Ian Laurenson is using bookmarks in OOo. That
works apparently.
But doing so in Word is less-than-ideal.
We're thus stuck with less-than-ideal options: using bookmarks in
Word, or breaking the chance for round-tripping between Word and OOo.
So I'd like to suggest two possible solutions for OOo:
1) on Word import, convert fields to bookmarks
2) support the new text:meta-field structure that will be in ODF 1.2,
and map Word fields to it
Obviously I'd consider #2 to tbe more forward-looking option. It
would just also require implementing an RDF library and API to manage
the metadata associated with the field.
