if you open a document with. let's say 700 pages on different computers, you may get inconsistent page breaks, i.e. on your Solaris machine you may get 710 pages, on your Mac maybe only 695. This can be caused by different installed fonts with results in different line breaks and page breaks. The soft page break information _could_ be used by applications to create the same number of pages with the same content. But this application will have to do some work, if the content does not fit into the page, e.g. shrink the font size or grow the page size. It's only a possibility, currently there are no plans for e.g. the OOo word processor to use this information for formatting. I could imagine of a completely different application (e.g. a presentation or drawing application) which uses this soft page breaks to import a text document.

Thanx for this explanation. So short, it can be used by word-processing applications (cross platform) for proper export and import of pagination, which often causes problems due to different fonts.
(With a little more imagination, I could have thought it myself ;-) )

BTW, the problem is at least as present in presentations.

Good thing anyhow that ODF allows for this setting already!

Thanks again,
Cor
