Many people work with documents as outlines, or as cut and paste
documents. I do this quite a bit.
I will slam down a bunch of paragraphs or headings of items I want to
write about, then as the document fleshes out, I want to then
organize the document into its final form. This is done in Office
using the Outline view. As I see it, OO does allow one to prepare an
outline type of document, but it does not "own" the paragraphs that
are at any given level. One can build the document in Write and then
export it to Impress, where one can drag headings to promote or
demote them, and rearrange them. Paragraphs do get dragged around
too. Unfortunately, this process is not reversible. The outline
cannot be returned to Write, nor will the manipulations be possible
in Write itself. The lack of this mode in OO is going to be
significant to many end users. In my case, I ended up going out and
buying the Home and Student version of MS Office just to get around
this frustration.
First information about your request:
To implement such an outline view in OpenOffice.org Writer is an
already known issue. It has been requested several times. Due to
limited resources it had not been implemented yet.
All: reading his suggestion, it seems that he does not know the Navigator.
Jim: please press F5, and also look in the Help for Navigator. I think
it offers what you ask.
Cor, your are right.
The main requests from Jim can be solved using the Navigator.
My respond was mainly on having a complete outline view, which had been
requested already several times.
In the Navigator the existing outline/headings are visible and can be
promoted and demoted. They can also be rearrange.
