Issued the following command:
mvn assembly:assembly -o -Drelease
Inspection of the generated tarball with the following command
tar tvzf target/synapse-1.2-SNAPSHOT-bin.tar.gz
reveals the following entries:

Obviously the file permissions are incorrect. It is related to the issue
