I haven't delved into the inner workings where the template parser is instantiated, so this is probably a stupid proposition...but is the parser a candidate for injection? (with the default being the stax one we use now) Maybe its already something that gets injected, I haven't looked. I've never had issues with the parser personally, I've just read stuff on the list.
