This seems more in the right direction if your ask me. I too think the current one beats the ones suggested earlier. Though in your version it seems as if he is trying to hold while sliding out of the square ;-) I think you could get a long way with some better positioning. I like the cleanliness. It gives a more professional look.

Though I don't quite know why a recognizable logo that has been around for a while and which fulfills it's purpose more than adequately should be changed.

Me too. Using the gears as the background for the current logo might
