We've discussed this in the past. The general consensus was that many users were using log4j, and it was better to leave that as the default. Either way you can exclude the logging dependency and substitute your favorite package. But it was a matter of which way would make more users exclude the logging package. That said, maybe the time is now right to make the change. We should float this on the user list as well as dev.
