I've downloaded the chenillekit sources made some changes, and now it's
working with tapestry 5.3, and so far, it's been working fine.
I can, if you want, share the changed sources to save you some work

The mailing is working ad codehaus.org and despite any good will I
wasn't able to work on it but plan are to do that soon as I need it
for my client work on 5.3.1 release soon
