Hello, I guess you don't have to be a technical mentor. Enthusiasm, understanding and patience counts for a lot in GSoC. The technical issues are what the community is here for. In my (humble) opinion GSoC is mainly about getting the students to interact with the FOSS community, the technical stuff is icing on the cake.
