Hi everyone,

I'd like to share an update on the Apache Texera v1.3 release.

We've been actively working on the release, but quite a few issues have
come up during the process, particularly around licensing and build
reproducibility. Here's a summary of our progress and what's still blocking
RC1.

Completed / Progress Made

   -

Addressed multiple licensing issues identified through PJ's audit and
the release checker, including third-party dependencies, datasets,
generated code, and license drift between main and v1.3.
   -

Updated licensing information for Jupyter, Material Symbols, and
generated protobuf TypeScript in both main and v1.3.
   -

Replaced several assets with unclear licensing, including the Icons8
comment icon and Spider-Man sample image, and addressed the Iris dataset
   licensing issue.
   -

Worked with Ian on reproducible builds and verified that the image
   builds reproducibly on our machines.

Remaining RC1 Blockers

   -

   https://github.com/apache/texera/pull/8812 – Reproducible builds (Ian):
waiting for final verification and remaining fixes.
   -

https://github.com/apache/texera/pull/8813 – RC workflow changes (Xuan):
move signing and staging to the release manager's local environment.
   -

   https://github.com/apache/texera/issues/8984 – About 210 bundled images
still lack documented provenance. We need to determine how to handle these
for the release, potentially through DISCLAIMER-WIP while the audit
   continues.
   -

https://github.com/apache/texera/pull/8999 – Replace vendor logos in
   operator icons.
   -

Remaining licensing changes need to be reviewed, merged, and backported
   where applicable.

A lot of the licensing issues were discovered during release preparation,
and addressing them has taken considerably more work than initially
expected. We've made quite some progress, but I don't think we're ready to
cut RC1 until the remaining blockers are resolved.

We'd appreciate any help in moving the remaining issues forward.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the release effort so far!

Best,

Meng
