Duru Can Celasun commented on THRIFT-5113:
------------------------------------------

I've been slowly working on a new version of the website that unifies various
bits of documentation here: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/THRIFT-4710
It's quite stalled at this point, but I'd like to get back to it eventually.
Contributions are welcome.

I agree that the current state of documentation is somewhere between lacking
and abysmal and makes the project less approachable. However, nobody assigns
tasks in thrift, so any improvements must come from volunteers and so far
nobody has really stepped up to the (admittedly monumental) task.

I also generally agree about mailing lists. I grew up with them, but their
suitability for attracting new talent decreases every day. I'd personally be
happy to suggest the ASF Slack as the official communication medium on the
website, but that should be approved by at least a few more PMC members.

> I think it would be very helpful if there where a developer chat, where users
> and developers could ask questions and get (sometimes) a response with
> shorter turnaround times and less overhead. Is this something thrift
> developers could consider?
> An often-used web-based chat with little overhead that integrates well with
> github is [https://gitter.im/]. There are already a significant number of
> Apache projects present:

> Relates to THRIFT-5112
