While running the regression tests, it turns out that the "beta-1g" run that we
used to make the decision to release 4.0.0-beta-1 had some changes before the
4.0.0-beta-1 release.
I incorrectly fixed a merge conflict. This meant that 4.0.0 agreed with what
we're actually getting out of 4.0.0-beta-1, but NOT what we had in the
regression tests before the 4.0.0-beta-1 release.
Let's fix that merge conflict but retain the improvements from this snafu.
