In 4.0.0, we left room for improvements in passing the workaround for bytes
from pipesclient to pipesserver.
On this ticket, we'll use smile's direct byte handling to avoid base64 noise.
We do not think this will lead to earthshaking improvements, but it might help
decrease cpu usage a bit.
