A pattern we used for the CTC GOM (generic object model - much like tinker 
pop), was to allow dynamic casts of objects to registered interfaces. E.g.  

ObjectManager om = ...
om.registerIFace(MyDomainObject.class);

...

MyDomainObject obj = v.asClass(ifacename);

Martyn Cutcher took this much further with an alchemist project in which 
people authored domain application data models. Those data models were 
captured by annotations.  These annotations then supported code generation 
of various getters, setters, etc. for domain objects.  The object model 
then sat transparently behind those objects.

The GOM objects were known as GPO - generic persistent objects.  Each 
object was essentially a durable property map where some property values 
were simple properties and others were links.  Link sets collected the set 
of objects that pointed at a given object using the same link property. 
 You could then declare indices over those link sets.  This was all circa 
1999.  The main difference between this and blueprints is that blueprints 
eagerly reifies edges as object instances.
