Thank you for submitting this PR. On the surface it looks like a nice body
of work with all the docs and tests and everything. That said, this is a large
set of changes that introduces major new features, APIs, dependencies, and
other risks, making it the kind of PR that needs a community discussion and
time.
I've started a DISCUSS thread on the dev mailing list with my initial
thoughts on how we should proceed:
