The {{Traversal.isRoot()}} default implementation looks like:

        public default boolean isRoot() {
            return null == getParent() || getParent() instanceof EmptyStep;
        }
{code}

Could this be reduced to just a check of {{EmptyStep}} - i.e. can the parent 
never be {{null}}
