Yes I saw that and can see that it indicates that the XMLdecl has to be at the beginning, but was unsure about how that was to be read, related to this other section, which seems to imply that whitespace can optionally be added, and the parser is to ignore it (?): http://www.w3.org/TR/2004/REC-xml-20040204/#sec-white-space But I'm going off-topic now.
