At the moment, directory listings with large numbers of entries = DOS threat. Whatever we do, this is a valid security issue and we need to deal with it.
I think I can optimise the code and am happy to spend some time looking at it. If I succeed, great. If I can't optimise it enough or the changes are just to horrible to contemplate, we don't change the code and we add a suitable warning to the docs. One approach would be to turn off directory listings by default and put a nice big warning in the docs where the listings parameter is described.
