Summary: Create semantics for "path" attribute in embedded
                    context.xml
           Product: Tomcat 5
           Version: 5.5.16
          Platform: All
        OS/Version: All
            Status: NEW
          Severity: enhancement
          Priority: P2
         Component: Catalina
        AssignedTo: tomcat-dev@jakarta.apache.org
        ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This is a minor feature request.

At present, if the "path" attribute is specified in a context.xml file embedded
in the META-INF directory of a warfile, it is ignored and the context is
deployed as having the name of the warfile. This is inconvenient in a number of
ways:

* It creates unnecessary complexity for the user by modifying the behavior of
the context.xml file depending upon how it is deployed.

* It means that the warfile name cannot contain versioning information, making
it more difficult for a systems administrator with no knowledge of a web
application's internals to determine the version of the deployed webapp.

It would be very nice if the "path" attribute of the context.xml file could have
the same semantic meaning (specifying the context path under which the webapp is
deployed) across all of the different deployment methods available. If the
"path" attribute is not added or left blank, the current behavior can then be
assumed as the default.

Thanks,

Kris Nuttycombe
