On httpd, we added the 'Compatibility' tag to address this, e.g.

or
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/trunk/mod/mod_deflate.html#deflatecompressionlevel
So users of the 'current version' know what features apply to the module they
have installed/are configuring for.
