Just a heads up that I am looking at this and I don't think #890 is
quite the right approach. I'm currently deep in svn archaeology trying
to get to the bottom of why some things are the way they are.
I'm expecting to have a proposal to address the underlying issue in #890
along with some clean-up / clarifications / better docs for SSO soon (ish).
