All,
Casually looking around our web site, I don't see any official EOL
dates for tcnative 1.1.x and 1.2.x, while the truth is that we've
moved-on.
I think we should announce them, unless Google Gemini is right when it
says that Tomcat native releases are supported as long as the Tomcat
version is shipped with is supported. I also see no evidence of that
"fact" on our web site. So if *this* is true, I think we should come
right out and say it.
Thoughts?
We should certainly agree a position and write it up somewhere on the
website so things are clear for out users.
For Tomcat Native, I view it more as we support the major versions 1.x
and 2.x and the minor version increments are more to do with changes in
minimum OpenSSL and APR versions - and those because the previous
minimum version is no longer supported.
That's fair, and I agree.
It seems we HAVE announced EOL for tcnative 1.1.x:
https://lists.apache.org/thread/go8w7b6jj8o48gpg89lv61rt4g36o22g
I propose that we announce the EOL of tcnative 1.2.x effective as of the
date-of-announcement + 1 year. This is what we did with 1.1.x.
The last material change to tcnative 1.2.x was this one:
commit 193c4e504fc10f74737b062ddd1b34f54f38a268
Author: Michael Osipov <[email protected]>
Date: Wed Oct 18 22:22:06 2023 +0200
BZ 67818: SSL#setVerify()/SSLContext#setVerify() silently set
undocumented default verify paths
This was more than 2 years ago.
The latest 1.2.x release was 2023-09-28 which, notably, does not include
michael-o's last committed fix. (Though I suspect that went into
tcnative 1.3.x.)
We have continued to update 1.3.x since the beginning of 2024 when we
essentially transitioned from 1.2.x -> 1.3.x to follow OpenSSL. tcnative
1.2.x required OpenSSL 1.1.x or later, and that reached project EOL in
September 2023. I think we should have announced the EOL of tcnative at
that moment with a year's notice.
So I think it's time we formalize the reality that we have stopped
working on 1.2.x and don't intend to resume it.
