So now I browse directly to /webappA/path1/default.htm and it gets past the 404. Must be that default welcome page is only being added to root paths, not sub-paths. But left with an empty response now though, next up is it redirects to a request which should hit the *.abc=CustomServlet... will step through what it's doing.
