Ok.
I upgraded to 1.5.18-1 thinking maybe the 1.5.18 bugs were
fixed.
That was a timing issue, see
 <http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=51560>.

Cygwin bugs don't get fixed in the same version, you have to
wait for the next release of the dll or use a snapshot.

No luck.
No wonder.

I'll next try to change to 1.5.17 and see if that helps.

I still get precisely the same error at the same place.
I strongly suspect that it is not a cygwin problem as cygwin
1.5.18 works fine up to (nearly) the end of a m117 build and
didn't show this problem for me.

I believe jim at amarooas dot com dot au might be right:

Might not be relevant, but I vaguely recall an error like this was
caused by cvs
update merging problems. Look in the file for strings like this
<<<<<
-=-=-=-

You can easily run into these problems if you do a "cvs up/co ..."
in a somehow modified source tree.

Maybe you should do a fresh
  cvs co -rSRC680_m117 OpenOffice
  cvs up -C -r1.15 solenv/inc/startup/wnt/macros.mk
*after* removing the old source.
