Despite the fact that I apparently irritated someone for not sending in my full log, that post was, indeed helpful. I now know that my crash comments were highly premature. Just to get this into google for others, I'll tell you what has happened. In the meantime, I am investigating the possibility of viruses on my computer -- it is running a full virus scan now.

About the crash I mentioned which relates to zip: That would be my fault. In my earlier compiles, the zip file was there. For various reasons, I upgraded cygwin, and I failed to go back and change the symlinks to hard code, and to update the zip file. My fault. In some sense, I followed the instructions once, but not twice.

You actually didn't read the build instructions correctly ;)
the Archive::Zip perl module is a build requirement. But what wonders
me: Didn't configure complain about that?

For the record: Yes, configure would catch if Archive::Zip is
missing.

OTOH, I don't have a clue about the Windows build environment, so...

Not a general problem, usually it works fine ...
