Bizarre. I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.04, and the only thing I did was 
this:

   sudo apt-get install g++ autoconf libtool automake libssl-dev tcl-dev expat 
libexpat-dev libdb-dev


and it builds fine. Can you attach the entire config.log ? Something is missing 
or something on your box... Maybe make sure "ldconfig" has been run (although, 
that really should happen automatically, so just grasping at anything here ...).
