preface.html needs a cleanup

The preface needs a bit of a clean up:
- it references chapters and appendices -- think its the only place. (is that
section worth keeping? actually...
- it doesn't have much real information (except conventions). Should we keep
this page at all? (move the conventions someplace... perhaps to the end of
overview?
- Perhaps we should make the overview the 1st landing page?
