Arvind, Thanks for pointing this out. The operations to start/stop hdfs, hbase, etc were deadly slow on this run. I don't think it is expected behavior to be so slow, but I'll take a look at that VM.
In this case a bit longer timeout would've helped, but next time they might be even slower. So I'm inclined to see if it is a test host problem rather than increase timeout. Either way, I'll investigate today.
