Use bits instead. You can get eight times as many per message. :-)

Thanks!  I can be wordy, so I like the 140 character challenge.  Like writing 
software or sonnets or haiku - the structure and limits are what give rise to 
art.

Besides, there are ways around the 140 char limits....
