Just as a solution for the problem: I used Xvnc instead of Xvfb, and
what I discovered was that it was trying to complete the setup
procedure. After completing it, it run smoothly.

Thanks Martin, and thanks all who answered my questions.

I don't have any direct experience of oood, but I do have extensive
experience of running OOo on the server with our own product 3BTransform.

There are lots of reasons why OOo might stop. The best way to find out
what is going on is to use a VNC X server instead of Xvfb. That way you
can connect to it and watch as OOo starts up. Often the reason is
trivial (e.g. the installer starts up) but, as you say, it can be
infuriatingly hard to find.

You may need to tweak the soffice shell-script so that it exec's
soffice.bin instead of just calling it.

Running OOo via strace can also help if you are prepared to wade through
very large log files.

If you want a pre-packaged product for running OOo on the server then
check out 3BTransform on our website, or the live demo at

I hope this helps,
