I have come across the problem again and this time was able to track it down.
UIMA has problems parsing type description files if Xalan 2.6.0 is on the
classpath. With Xalan 2.7.0 and newer, it works.
Would it be an option to add a dependency to Xalan > 2.6.0 to UIMA?
